Let's pretend that you do not have unlimited funds. Let's pretend that you want to buy a selection of lenses that cover all of the options, or as close as your finances will sensibly allow. Let's make the further assumption that you want to produce the very best quality photographs that you possibly can. You will undoubtedly want to buy a zoom and this lens from Sony is an excellent place to start. Some would say that given these boundaries and the limitation of available lenses for the Sony range, it is the only place to start if you have a tight budget.
It says 'Zeiss' on the lens and to the best of my knowledge 'Carl Zeiss' hasn't put his name to any 'stinkers' so far for DSLR's are concerned. 'Carl Zeiss' makes optics, good optics, up there with the best and for that of course you pay a premium. It is a similar story with Sony's 'G' range.
This lens is the cheapest 'Zeiss' for a DSLR. Do I care that is not made out of metal? I do not. The lens looks and feels good. There is nothing inferior about the construction or materials in this lens, it just is not metal that's all.
If you don't have a full size sensor, (I am talking to the people in the cheap seats here, the owners of 200's 300's 700's and 500's) you need to get as many pixels on the page as possible. That means getting as much as you can right in the camera to avoid death by cropping. You also need good glass. This Sony lens is undoubtedly good glass! I have found that it produces good results throughout its whole range. But stay away from using it at maximum zoom and the results from its widest aperture to F11 and the results are scalpel sharp and really quite amazing with minimal anomalies. If you set your camera up properly with a shallow depth of field and focus carefully, the difference between razor sharp and the drift away to soft focus is extraordinarily pleasing. Only good glass produces this kind of effect and makes it soft and satisfying. Makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside when you get it right!
This was the first lens that I purchased that produced results with my A350 that made me think that I might actually be able to compete with the big boys, talent permitting. After a few months of use, I wouldn't change a thing. Auto focus is fine, manual focus is a little heavy as is the zoom adjustment, but I am used to that now and wouldn't want to change it. All things considered, I think this lens is utterly brilliant and a bargain!

this is a great lens. Simple to use, quiet functionality, but most importantly it takes great pictures. With such a magnification range it could quite easily be the only lens you would need for your camera. If Im being really fussy its a bit on the expensive side but it is very well made.

Optically this is what standard zooms should be. It is sharp throughout the range. Negatives include some chromatic aberration at 16mm, and also at 16mm it is prone to vignetting if you use filters.
Physically it feels solid. At the price it is a shame they used the slotted screw system to drive the focus instead of their SSM system, but it works fast enough.

Great lens, very sharp, low distortion, very low purple fringing...its great, but you have to ask where a price like this comes from so I have knocked off 1 star for the cost
Optically there are no complaints from me, and I have had some great results...I think that the build could be a bit better given the price, there is nothing wrong with it really, its just that it doesnt feel like an expensive product, it has the construction of a run of the mill kit lens
But ultimately its down to the results, and this lens is just grest in that department, I bought it for the wide angle and its good, Just a note...I have a Kodak P880 camera which gives super results and has a fixed lens that goes 24mm to 140mm equiv, if you cant or dont want to afford this lens, get a used Kodak P880...in decent light its almost as good (seriously), I defend my opinion of the Kodak P880 lens in the comments, so if you find that hard to believe...and it does sound unlikely...read my response in the comments section below

This is an excellent and incredibly compact wide angle lens for Sony Camcorders. It's so quick to attach and super easy to use; I just leave the black adapter ring on the camcorder all the time and then clip on the lens when required. It comes with a velcro attachable semi-hard case to protect the lens when not in use which I have attached to the camcorder case. I was a bit surprised there is no lens cap but for overall compact size of the lens and case, I can live without one!
For me this lens means I can film focus groups and interviews for work without hiring equipment as the extra width in the frame is ideal for this purpose - the standard lens is just too narrow in many of these situations.
I also bought the normal wide angle lens but returned that one as it was so bulky and I wouldn't need to be able to zoom in with a wide angle lens attached anyway.
Which reminds me - there is another review of this lens which was given two stars only, as the reviewer complained about fuzzy pictures - the product information does say that it can only be used in the fully zoomed out position as the compactness of the lens is designed that way and wouldn't technically be able to focus if you zoom in as it's just one flat lens...
Anyway, if you need to widen the angle of your Sony Camcorder and don't need to zoom in, then buy this lens. It's a bargain price too!

Attaching this converter to the HandyCam seems to really mess up the long distance focussing. Landscapes become very fuzzy, though close-ups aren't too bad.
It's a shame because the compact size makes it perfect for slipping into your pocket, and it clips on and off the camera very easily. But poor quality optical performance really make it unusable.

Very nicely made lens - solid and chunky but not too heavy and a good
idea for those of us that despise ugly pixelated digital zoom!
Big lens provides a reasonably good solid and bright image but ONLY if you are good enough
at holding your camcorder steady!
For high magnifications it is best used along with a monopod or tripod etc.
I bought this for use on a Sony HD widescreen camcorder where the maximum recommended
teleconverter is 1.7x.
My standard zoom without the teleconverter is 10x optical and with the 2x converter it
thus becomes 20x optical.
The only caveat is that at minimum zoom the wide angle of the view clips off the
corners slightly (Obviously why Sony recommend a 1.7x converter!)
But this one was nearly half the price!
Nice little bag and plastic caps for front and back.

Obvioulsy you will already know this is required in order to fit the telescopic or wide angle lense. The adapter is great for outdoor use and some lighter indoor photography. Unfortunatey it does cover the flash. This hasn't been an issue as when zoomed in to the maximum the flash doesn't tend to pick up the distance objects anyway without the adapter.

It is a very sturdy but extremely poorly designed piece of equipment as it blocks the flash on the camera. I actually bought this lens just after Christmas but ended up returning it after 2 weeks as there were a couple of annoying characteristics that really bugged me.
Let me start by saying that the focal range is huge, image quality is acceptable and the price is amazing (if you pay less than £330 that is, try Jessops). This lens has many good points but it also has a couple of negative points which annoyed the hell out of me, although you might find that you can live with them.
The first problem is darkening in the corners. It is quite extreme at wide angle and large aperture. Of course most telephoto lenses in this price range will suffer from it, but this lens seemed particularly bad. The darkening was also uneven so it was hard to edit it out evenly. Secondly it suffers quite easily from lens flare which ruined more than a couple of shots. In time you would get used to these limitations. Thirdly sharpness is ok but not significantly better than the cheapo 18-70 kit lens which incidentally out-performed this lens with regard to darkening and flare.
I guess that Sony have produced a product that is a one lens solution for those on a budget. Any lens has its limitations, but it's all down to how much you want to spend and what you're prepared to accept in terms of quality. The more you spend the more you get. As for me, I think I'll wait to save for the Carl Zeiss 16 - 80 and the 70 - 300 G SSM. A lot more money I know but I just can't live with the 18-250's limitations.
I've given the lens 4 stars in terms of what you're getting for your money. This may not be the lens for me but it's still incredible value.

I like this lens. If you took all of my lenses and left just one, I'd want it to be this one. The range (18-250) is great for the vast majority of photography done while travelling or touring. This lens particularly excels on holidays when, generally, you are outdoors in reasonable or good light. It benefits a lot from being stopped down to f5.6-f8 when you get really good sharpness, hence the need for reasonable light. Wide open, particularly at the wide focal lengths, it can be disappointingly soft (worse than the kit lens).
If I could only take two lenses travelling with me it would be this one, backed up by a 50mm f1.4 for low-light social shots.
Pros - Great range, very sharp when stopped down a bit, good build quality
Cons - Really quite soft wide open at wide angle

I purchased this for my Sony HD camcorder. It is a (slightly unusual) 30mm screw fitting which you need to take care when attaching - I don't think I'd like to do it with gloves on! It comes with caps for front and back and a soft pouch to store it.
It works very well for narrow street scenes when you can't get far enough away to take in a whole building without panning. It does add a rather annoying flare when you have bright sun to the side of your shot but I'll just have to be aware of that and work around it.
It is a little expensive and with the 30mm fitting you don't have many other alternatives (at least I couldn't find any!). Overall, though, it is a very high quality product.

I had ordered the Tele conversion lens from another e-trader. After waiting for 3 weeks (I was told it would take 1 week to deliver) and having no confirmation that they would be able to deliver soon, I ordered the same item from Amazon and received it within two days. I am really impressed.
As for the lens, it is useful for anyone, who likes to make photos with a difference without being a professional. It makes the camera a bit front heavy, but it is a small price to pay.

I brought one of these lens about a year ago straight from sony. its a brilliant len i use it for taking pictures at the btcc (british touring car championship). It takes great images with no faults or distortions. one thing i would say is to use a tripod or something, because its pretty hard to hold it still at full zoom. I suggest you buy it from amazon as its much cheaper than high street. :)

I bought this for my Canon S5 after reading reviews on the Canon users forum, and I am not disappointed. It fits on the typical 58mm adaptor tube you get for the filters and 'cheaper' lenses. The build quality & the image quality are first class. Avoid the cheaper lenses from the auction websites, as the magnification is too great for the internal optics, and go for this! It feels heavy, but solid. Very happy!

I have owned one of these for a month now and it is amazing. Its construction (made in Japan) is sturdy and wonderful to behold. It is quite big (as one would expect), fitting in the fist, and makes the camera nose heavy but it does exactly what it says on the box: magnifies the image by a factor of 1.7, making it possible to get even closer to your objects of photography.
I have not noticed any problems with colour or any other distortions, and I've been quite careful to compare images with and without the lens.
The box comes with caps for both ends of the lens and a lovely pouch. You need your lens convertor (comes with the Cybershot) as this attaches the lens to the camera.
I use this lens with my CyberShot DSC-H10. The box says it works with the H5, H3, H2 and H1 as well. Check the Sony website for further compatability.
