Obvioulsy you will already know this is required in order to fit the telescopic or wide angle lense. The adapter is great for outdoor use and some lighter indoor photography. Unfortunatey it does cover the flash. This hasn't been an issue as when zoomed in to the maximum the flash doesn't tend to pick up the distance objects anyway without the adapter.

If you require a conversion lens or wide conversion lens for you Sony Cybershot, then you will need to purchase this adaptor. It is a very sturdy but extremely poorly designed piece of equipment as it blocks the flash on the camera. So unless you have good lighting, using this adaptor and the lens's designed to fit in it are a waste of time.
